Good evening:
OK I am a bit over the age group for yuppie boaters however am hoping someone can help me out. I live on a large farm, a bit over a 1 acre Bass pond, spring fed and about 25 feet deep. Canoes are out,(per the wife and my age) so I bought a 12 foot row boat to go out on Golden pond and feed my fish-ducks and read. Of course it did not come with oars or oar locks, but it does have the fittings for oar locks to fit in.
I went to the sporting goods store and they had all sizes -lengths-styles. Salesman said pick what I wanted??So much for help.
Any sage advice would be greatly appreciated.

Correct oar length is a function of the distance between the oarlocks.  For some boats and users, getting this right is critical; for your situation, it's not.  7.5 or 8.0 foot oars are about right.  That may sound too long, but it's not.

I have a 12' Starcraft aluminum row boat that came with 7' oars that were to short. The 8' version is a better choice.
