My nephew and I are fast at work building our own nutmeg. We're having a blast! We have been working on a number of the extra parts of the boat, while waiting for our epoxy order to come in. We've got the rudder assemblies, and the leeboard pieces pretty much knocked out, and they look pretty good. We were wondering three things that are not explained in the plans:

1. Do you generally recommend putting some shape to the leading edges of these "in the water" pieces? We were thinking of using a simple "round-over bit" in our router to soften the leading edge of the rudder and the leeboard a bit. I remember reading somewhere that people experiment with this... because sometimes there can be a rythmic wobble developing without it. What do you think?

2. Do you recommend weighting these pieces at all?

3. How do you recommend we finish coat these items? The wood looks so nice I was thinking about putting something clear on. I also imagine many would simply use the same paint they use to finish the boat hull. Do you have any advice?

We look forward to your responses. It's nice to have experts coaching us throughout the process. Thanks again. We are having fun with our nutmeg!

Oh, and by the way, the epoxy arrived today, so we'll be taking our first swipe at creating "butt joints" tommorrow... and first shot at mixing and using epoxy as well. Wish us luck!

Hi Dave,

Glad you folks are having fun on the construction of NUTMEG!

I asked Dave Carnell about the edge finishing of the Rudder and leeboard. He stated "You can round the leading edges of the leeboard and rudder and taper the trailing edges, but it won't make significant difference."

Weight added to the rudder or leeboard is not necessary either. If after using your NUTMEG you feel this would improve handling to imerse these items, you can add the modifications to the 'winter project'.

To "finish coat" the rudder and leebaord one could use a wood sealer first, then paint. Or, coat with wood sealer, then add UV varnish coats for the clear look. You could also epoxy coat the rudder and leeboard (more expensive), remove the blush and again coat with UV varnish to protect the epoxy.

So ready to post a picture of your progress...?

I'll do you one better than just post a picture. I have actually created a blog to document our progress in this build! I did this because my nephew Dan and I have many family and friends that are interested in what we are doing. So, instead of sending pictures to dozens of people over and over again, we are posting them once... and inviting people to keep coming back to check out our progress.

There isn't much to it yet because of our schedule conflicts... but I am happy to allow others to see what there is so far, if they are interested.

The blog address is:

Please don't laugh too hard if you see us doing something stupid! We are learning as we go!

Thanks again for your help and advice.
