ROCKPORT (April 30): Pictures of a Moosabec Reach Boat – built by Peter Simpson in Rockport, Maine
The builder, Peter Simpson, provided the following information about the boat and her construction:
14' 3" long
4' 6" Wide
Centerboard
2 rowing stations
2 spritsail rigged masts with 3 mast steps (for varying wind and weather conditions)
“Built for Rick Hayden. The lines came from a Moosabec Reach boat donated to Mystic Seaport by Andy Chase of Maine Maritime Academy.
The original was carvel planked (smooth surface) which works best if the boat is kept in the water all the time so the planks remain tightly swollen minimizing leaks. Rick wanted his version to be built so that it could live on a trailer and this meant either going with cold molded construction or lapstrake. He chose lapstrake as most appealing to him.
Launching was in 2005. She is in use on both lake and sea and has proven to be a very competent sailor standing up well and staying dry in very windy conditions. Andy even liked the way she sails.”
