I have a sunfish that is over 40 years old. I'd like to install two cleats, one on each side of the hull to be able to tie the sail line to while I'm sailing.  Im not sure if i can get a plate under the hull to attach the cleat. Is there an adheasive out there that would hold the tension of the sail without popping off?

Hi

I am not familiar with Sunfish construction as they are not common here in UK and so I can't directly answer your question.

I was thinking that, rather than fitting cleats to the hull, you would be better incorporating a ratchet stop block in your mainsheet (sail line) system.

When engaged it would take the strain so you could relax but would able to be quickly released to de-power the sail when necessary.

You would only need a small cheap model

Worth a try before you start messing with the boats hull.

I have used them on similar sized boats - Lasers and Toppers.

I looked into the ratchet stop block, and I think that will work perfectly, thanks alot.  I was looking at the different kinds, and i saw a Single with a  300lbs SWL and a breaking strength of 2000lbs.  Do you think that is enough?  I appreciate the help.

Hi

A single block should be good enough for your simple mainsheet.

300lbs sounds very adequate - I guess you could only hold 30 or 40 lbs using musclepower alone for any length of time.

Good luck with it
