I was hoping to find a meet-n-greet page, but didn't find one. Thought I saw it the other day. Well, I'm new here. Hi All!
Been sailing since Cap'n Bob Zuill got me addicted in Bermuda in 1999, on a 42' Morgan ketch the Alibi, in the Hamilton Sound. So, what next? Took ASA bareboat lessons out of Burnham Harbor in 2000, and ASA basic coastal nav course out of BVI's in 2001. Have a 14' Shell Swifty I cart to lakes around here. Hey, it's been out a lot! This is my 5th summer with her, been out at least about 80 times, and the average sail is 3 hours on the water. And that's only once this year, and only 5 times in '06 due to Mom's health.
As for the rest of me and my sordid life, I'm 51 for a few more weeks, single (as much as I adore women, I think this happens sort of by mutual whatever...), did 5 years of the USN as an MR2, have a lot of machinist-mechanic-draftsman experience behind me, collect hobbies that require tons of expensive gear, am currently a cooling system and fluids engineer at a national lab full time, an artist part time (much work nautical), and yes, I play bass fiddle and bass guitar as a hobby. (Hence the moniker, yes?)
And I'm planning on building my next boat. Currently, Selway-Fisher's Chincoteague stands out, I already have the plans, and she'd summer in the sounds of the Carolinas, so she'd be right at home. Also like the looks of the Wooden Boat Shop's Mist, Bolger's Chebacco, and Wilder B Harris's 25' gaff-rigged sloop. These, of course, #2 builds, if #1 evr happens.
When and if I retire, I'm thinking at least 3 to 6 months a year, for at least 3 to 6 years, on a shoal draft or keelboard hull sailing the ICW, as my equivalent of an RV. (There's nothing holding me to the Chicago area, and I have family all over the east coast, especially NC, so relocation is probably eminent.) So I'm looking at sites that can prepare me for this.

Hi All!

Welcome Bassman,
It's good to see another new face around here, the boards have been quiet. I too collect expensive hobbies and gear. (and play a bit of fingerstyle guitar)
I can assure you that if you finish the first small boat, you'll already have ideas and plans for the next one. It's an addicting hobby. As I type this my Nutmeg plans have already arrived...and I can't start on them because I have another boat sitting up on the sawhorses not yet finished. It's madness I know, to be ordering plans before finishing boats I've already started on, but there are worse vices one could have.
