Hi all,

I'm your newest member and wanted to say "hello". I grew up in RI and am now landlocked in VT. I've had a Bart Hauthaway Greenland kayak since 1982. Other small boats come and go, but this one's a keeper.

My father has had a 16' Old Town double-ender since I was born and I'd like something along that line -- fast, forgiving, stable in chop, preferably 2 rowing stations...

Currently looking at various Dynamite Payson/Phil Bolger designs to build this summer... Is there anyone on the list that has experience with the Gypsy (building or rowing/sailing) or other similar designs? My husband has good carpentry skills but no boatbuilding experience.

Happy New Year to all!

cheers,
-sj

Hello D Jorg, welcome aboard!

As to building a small boat for a summer project, maybe a boat kit would be the ticket... As to a  tandum rowing  craft  take a look at the Pygmy Boats WineGlass Wherry.   At 90lbs and 14' overall she can carry a load and with two rowing is as fast as they come.

How about the kits offered by Shell Boats? These are dry completed by Fred Shell, then disassembled and shipped to the builder. Easier than most to put together. The Swifty 14 looks doable and would carry a bigger load and be more stable under sail than Gypsy.

As to a visual build-out of Bolger's Gypsy H. H. Payson's site shows some detailed photos of the completed design.

Hope the above is helpful.  If you build this summer please keep a log and photos and we would like to post your results on the Small Boat Forum Adventures page.

Best for the New Year!    Thom V

You might check the designers on this website, especially John Welsford and style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff00"Jim Michalak http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/r/indexes.htm

Thanks for the leads Thom. We like the Wineglass Wherry -- pretty much fills the bill and is very pretty too. We'll keep the log and photos and keep you posted on the progress. It's going to be fun! All we need now is some warmer weather, but by the time it warms up, we'll have what we need and be ready to start.

cheers,
-sj

Try NUTMEG. No easier boat to build. Builders who had never built even a bookcase are afloat and venturing to new projects. Why consider a kit when you can find it all at Home Depot for much less.
