I am not a sailing boat person by any measure.  However I have a question that maybe someone can help me with.  The liner RMS Titanic had 30ft. main lifeboats which were equipped with sails.  From photos we know that the were of the single mast standing lug rig type.  On the aftmost thwart there were two wooden structure that I'm wondering about.  The attached  photo shows the top of the thwart and these two structures.  I suspect that they are some kind of fairlead or cleat but I just don't know their exact name or function.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Here is the photo from which the enlarged cropped area in my previous question was taken.  The file is large (1.5 meg) that's why I can't attach it and am providing this link:  http://webpages.charter.net/bpread/photos/Lifeboat%2003.jpg
