The universal answer for a sliding seat rig seems to be to drop in a piantedosi, oarmaster or Vince's fitness (!?) model. But these things are quite expensive.
It doesn't look that complicated to build. Has anyone designed a good one they want to share?
What I've done is to pick up an old exercise rowing machine at the local thrift store. They are usually VERY cheap and generally there are lots of them. With a little ingenuity(is that spelled right?), and a bit of imagination (not a whole lot), it can be adapted to fit most small boats. You might have to mount a different seat for comfort. I used a plastic kitchen chair and removed the legs. My sliding rower is in a 16ft Old Town canoe. By the way, I'm using a forward rowing set-up like the one used by Wesley Snipes in the movie "U.S. Marshalls". It's awful nice to go forward when you PULL on the oars (unlike pushing on them), and to see where you're going, not where you been. Good Luck!
