There is a new low price sculling boat for recreational use in the US. The Edon TS515 is made in Australia and was brought in for the first time this year. It's aimed at people that want to row but don't want to spend $5000 on a racing boat which is fragile and difficult to row. It comes with detachable pontoons for learning and for cold water rowing.
The boat is made of a polyethylene sandwich with closed cell foam trapped between two PE layers. This gives the boat the robustness of a plastic Kayak but it's much lighter. At 17ft long it's easy to car top and is under $2000.
