I bought this motor at a garage sale along with a 15' Alumacraft and tariler about a month and 1/2 ago.  The motor is very clean...under the cover and outside.  I hooked it up to the garden hose, and it started on the third pull! I've put at least 30 hours on the motor since I bought it.  The motor runs great most of the time.  For no reason it will quit...sometimes at high speed, and sometimes when trolling.  I have replqced the gas, spark plugs, used Seafoam, messed with the low idle mixture screw...and still the problem persists.  Yesterday, the motor was smoking quite a bit when started for the first time, but after a couple of hours it coughed, and quit.  Usually it will restart after messing with the mixture screw, but not this time - I had to row it back to the landing...3 hours (i'm a little sore, in more ways than one!) Like I said, the motor is very clean, and when it's not acting up runs very strong.  Here's what I have done...

New properly mised gas (100:1) / Two new plugs QL78YC

I'm nervous about putting it in the lake again...any ideas???

Are you sure 100:1 is the correct fuel mixture? All outboards I have encountered use a 50:1 mixture. The improper mix may have something to do with your problems.

It's fixed...after hooking up the motor to the garden hose, and pulling it a hundred times, i noticed a pin and spring disconnected off the carb linkage...i reconnected it, and guess what - it ran great!

I have another question - i want to save $ on putting it to bed for the Winter...can i winterize it myself, if so - how?

Winterizing is a simple process that you should be able to do yourself.
1. Flush the motor out in fresh water if it has been used in the salt
2. Spray outboard fogging or storage fluid into the carb until the motor stalls out. This will lubricate and protect the internal parts from corrosion.
3. Drain the fuel from the carb(s)
4. Drain the lower unit and refill with fresh lower unit lube
5. Store the motor upright in a dry location

Getting a manual that covers your motor will explain the winterization process in more detail, and go over anything I may have missed.

Thanks for the help!

Still lots of fishing out there yet, I'll follow these steps in mid-Oct.

I've never heard of 100:1 fuel oil mix for an outboard....

I would seriously re-check that.

what model alumacraft do you have?

I have two alumacrafts

a 1959 model FDR

and a 1965 Maracaibo ( YR14 )

yep sure enough it's a 100:1 fuel to oil mixture...i'm like you, i've had never heard of it either until i got this motor.

i have a '78 Alumacraft 15' with a 25 hp Johnson...an recently my neighbor allowed me to use his '57 Evinrude Fleet Twin 7.5 hp as a kicker.

back in the eighties they switched to 100:1 for a year or two.but then switched back to 50:1 as they had some issues i think.most people i know that run a motor of that vintage use 50:1 just to be safe.that said, many people use amsoil mixed at 100:1 for anything requiring 50:1 mix.its up to each person to decide on their own. i use 50:1 in my outboards and power saws.

Even though your post about this intermittent failure is about 2 years old, I am amazed that if a linkage was disconnected, your problem was intermittent and not constant! It sounded like a bad ignition coil to me, I've had coils be intermittent when bad, and also had an ignition condenser on a 1974 Mustang II either short out or maybe have an open circuit, intermittently .
