here's the problem, my brother has a motor on his boat right now for some reason unknown right now will not run when its put into the water. It will run on dry land but once you put it into the water the motor just cranks over but doesn't start. He has changed the spark plugs and made sure the fuel was fresh but it did the same thing once he put it into the water. I have to find out what kind of motor it is as far as brand and model but it is an outboard.

If anyone has experienced this can you offer any help with this before we spend any unnecessary money for the wrong thing.

thanks

When the motor is put on the boat and in the water, have you let the motor down or is it on an angle? If it is on an angle, some motors won't start due to safety mechanisms. If it is a 4 stroke this might be due to an oil sensor or perhaps a water sensor. I have seen this problem before with a mate's boat. Lower the motor right down and with a bit of luck it will fire up

the boat has been in the water as far as it can be . nothing was ever done different than another time it was in the water. I am unsure about a water sensor or oil sensor that may be doing it. thanks for the tips and I will check with him on it.

update on this motor issue, It is a 2 cycle motor, the name is (Evanrude) unsure of spelling, it is a 1977 85 horse. I guess the main issue is that the motor will run out of the water on land but after you get the boat in the water it will not start at all. Is there a ground issue that could be causing this or something else? if anyone has ever had this happen to them please help and tell me what you did to fix it.

Thanks in advance

Will it turn over (can you hear it cranking)? When you put the motor in the water it creates back-pressure and if theres a bearing or seal gone in the lower end this could create enough resistance to stop the motor from running

It will run in a big tub of water but it will not run in the actual lake, since my post the water pump has been replaced cuz when it was in the water it would get hot. But if you hooked up the rabbit ears directly to the motor with the hose it would run cool. we are unsure what else to do, when it started doing this nothing was done to the motor. One day in the water and fine and the next it wouldnt run.

any help is greatly appreciated

I agree the problem is probably backpressure.
With the hull in the water the exhaust relief hole is submerged.
In the barrel or on flush-muffs the relief hole is above water level.
Try moving weight forward in the boat so the transom isn't sitting so low in the water.
See if that makes a difference. Let us know.
