Winslow Homer (1836 -1910) certainly had a wonderful way of capturing the proper shape of small boats on water. Below is the watercolor “The Blue Boat” done in 1892 of a classic north American canoe. Note the shading to bring out the fullness of the canoe side and the way the sheer, bow and stern shape are properly rendered. Judging from the rifle stock raised over the starboard side these gents appear to be hunting.
