Dick Newick has been designing fast sailing boats for more than 50 years specializing in catamaran and trimarans. Here is one of his smaller creations “Back to Basics” or B2 featuring a light hull, with unique shelter from the elements and accommodations for two willing to travel with a small galley shelving a two burner stove, a portable cooler, 5 gallon cans for water, and a bucket for a sink. The porta-head is just forward of the pilot station. The auxiliary engine is an outboard mounted in it’s own place aft on the port side and with a 5hp 4-cycle B2 will do about five knots.
B2’s accommodations show the bow area with the water closet, then the cockpit bench seat (which can convert into a fore and aft bunk for two). The cockpit can be open while underway or a canvas cover can be added for inclement weather still allowing the boat to be piloted while underway. The aft portion of B2 shows an enclosed double berth with storage space.
Two sail rigs have been designed for B2. One is a sloop with 340 Sq. Ft. of sail and the other is a Lug with 255 Sq. Ft. of sail.
B2 ‘s Particulars: LOA 26 ft., LWL 25.3 ft., Beam 19.5 ft., Draft 26” Displacement 2800 Lbs.
