Christa Malay is a pastel and watercolor artist who brushes to canvas her surroundings in the beautiful San Juan Islands of Puget Sound Washington. Here is what appears to be a double ended Salmon Dory set high on the island marsh grass resting in somnolence for the next fish opening. These boats were developed and generally found along the coast of Oregon and Washington. These dories were flat bottomed and about 20 feet in length, 6 feet or so wide and were launched through the beach surf, after which the outboard motor in a well was then lowered to troll for the elusive salmon.
With the dory highlighted in a splash of sun, one can almost smell the aroma of the fish net piled in the boat and taste the tang of salt marsh grass. Ms. Malay captures beautifully the blue gray of the nearby water and the low rain filled clouds touching the hills in the distance.
