Jay R. Benford has a knack for coming up with unique boat designs. His general design approach is to draw out a sweet hull in may lengths and add a variety of houses, accommodations and rigs offering many ways to go boating for various budgets. Here is a single version though of a large pram to be used as a day boat designed back in the 60’s when Mr. Benford called Friday Harbor WA his home.
Starting from the bow there is a forward cockpit with outside steering station and 2 water tanks below. Moving aft into the cabin the port side shows a head compartment with a sink, vanity counter, a toilet and a shower stall. The starboard side is the galley area with sink, stove, counter and decent stowage for the accouterments needed to dine onboard. The ice box is built-in on the starboard side of the forward cockpit floor. The aft counter in the galley has a pass through in the bulkhead to accommodate handing prepared food to the passenger area. The windows in the head/galley are area fixed glass, including the nifty 12” port lights. Further aft is a huge decked open salon area with a long athwart ships bench seat. One could purchase one of those outdoor table/seat ensembles seen at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. and set up comfortable accommodations for minimum outlay. The window coverings in this area are snap on rollup variety. Benford suggests twin 145 hp. outdrives, though a single larger Volvo DuoProp engine combination might work better today.

One wonders if this unique craft could be scaled down to offer inside steering, a galley platform, a head closet, the cockpit aft to have 2 bench seats/bunks fore and aft (port & starboard) and powered by a high thrust 50 hp. 4 cycle outboard in about a 19 foot trailerable package…?Attachment: BenfordDayBoat.gif (Downloaded 102 times)
