Here is a suggestion for a small buildable dory style skiff that would have some speed on the water, carry a decent load safely, and would have a high degree of sea keeping ability as long as piloted with care...
John Gardners “The Dory Book” is a treasure trove of practical vessels from which this design is lifted. This 16’ Semi-Dory is a fine candidate for the family recreation boat as well as for the fishing crowd. This skiff is built with plywood. One could use the Stitch & Tape – Tape & Seam epoxy building method and leaving out the floor boards, she would be quite light. This skiff is 16’ LOA, with a Beam of 5+', a Bow 3’+ above the water, with a Motor Well. Power her with an older 2 cycle 25 hp. outboard and she would scoot along. Or maybe one of the new 4 cycle outboards by Tohatsu (18 hp.) or Honda (the 20 Hp.) to get to planing speed (a 4 cycle 25 hp. might be a little too heavy for a this boat's narrow transom).
One could also buy a similar vessel in fiberglass called the 16’ Amesbury Dory Skiff from the Stur-Dee Boat Co. Tiverton RI.
